Miss World 2012: Meet Our African Queens

The Miss World 2012 competition is set to hold on Saturday, the 18th of August 2012 in China and over 120 beauty queens will be vying for the crown. Most of the contestants are already in China including Nigeria’s representative – Damiete Charles Granville. Damiete, who was 1st runner up at the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) pageant will be representing Nigeria instead of MBGN 2012 winner – Isabella Ayuk, who will compete at the Miss Universe pageant later on this year.

We present to you the beauty queens representing our continent (Africa). Fingers crossed, one of them will bring the crown home.

Miss Angola

  • Name: Edmilza Nicosia Mota SANTOS
  • Age: 21
  • Languages: Portuguese
  • Height: 17
  • Hobbies: Walking, dancing and anything fashion-related

Edmilza is currently studying psychology at University. She loves seafood and the great outdoors: Her personal motto is: respect nature. She describes herself as a great communicator.

Miss Botswana
  • Name: Tapiwa Anna-Marie PRESTON
  • Age: 20
  • Languages: Setswana, English, French
  • Height: 174
  • Hobbies: Swimming, painting, dancing (ballet)

Tapiwa describes herself as joyful, calm, driven , a co-operative person and a quick learner. She is currently pursing a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences; majoring in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Botswana. Her ambition is to obtain a Doctorate in Paediatric Psychology. She loves children hopes to open a centre for children with Autism in Botswana. She believes that her career path complements her nature and personality. 

Cote D’Ivoire

  • Name: Hadjau Helene-Valerie Djouka
  • Age: 18
  • Language: French
  • Height: 170
  • Hobbies: Music, jogging, travelling and fashion

Hadjau is currently in her first year in the University studying law. She describes herself as a jovial, kind, sincere and natural person. Her personal motto is “Hard work is the key to success”.

Equatorial Guinea

  • Name: Jennifer Riveiro Ilende
  • Age: 20

  • Height: 180
  • Hobbies: travelling, basketball and learning about new cultures

Jennifer is from Malabo and is in her third year in the University studying law. She enjoys . She hopes to one day work in politics and describes herself as having a fun and friendly personality who likes people.


  • Name: Melkam Endale
  • Age: 21

  • Hobbies: writing poems and playing football

Melkam is currently a university student hoping to change the image of her home country. Melkam’s favourite books are the Harry Potter series. Melkam’s personal motto is “Everything happens for a reason.”



  • Name: Marie Noelle Ada Meyo
  • Age: 22
  • Language: French

  • Hobbies: cycling, surfing and singing

Marie is a student from Libreville and she would like to one day work with helping the elderly. She says her favourite food is a local dish called manioc.


  • Name: Shamim Fauz Ali

  • Hobbies: swimming, reading and playing netball and basketball

Shamim grew up in Mombasa and she is currently studying architecture. She aspires to become a designer and describes herself as a hard-working and caring person.


  • Name:Nomazondo Veronica Mphakisoane
  • Age: 24

  • Height: 178
  • Hobbies: reading and dancing

Nomazondo is a business management student from Maseru and would like to become a chartered accountant. She loves poetry and describes herself as a competitive person. She says her favourite foods are traditional dishes.

  • Height: 167

Susan is a student and hopes to work toward attaining a PhD in information technology. She describes herself as a people’s person who is very hard-working, friendly and passionate. Her personal motto is “Work hard in all you do, never give up because the best is yet to come”.

Shalini is studying for a Masters degree in Communication and describes herself as being a determined and courageous person. She likes Chinese and traditional Mauritian food. Her personal motto is “Determination leads to success”.

Sherlyn describes herself as an outgoing, down-to-earth person. She says her proudest moment was graduating from the Seychelles Tourism Academy.

Sierra Leone
  • Name: Vanessa Ethleen Yvonne Willams
  • Age: 22
  • Languages: English & Krio
  • Height: 168
  • Hobbies: composing songs, singing and reading

Vanessa describes herself as a loving and caring person and is currently in the 2nd year of her degree. She grew up in Freetown. She aspires to one day become a musician. Her personal motto is “Honour yourself, then others will honour you”

South Africa

  • Name: Remona Moodley
  • Age: 23

Remona works as a business analyst having graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. She describes herself as an ambitious, dynamic and creative person. Her favourite food is anything cooked by her mother and goes on with life with her personal motto which says “Dream it, believe it, do it”.

South Sudan

Atong is in her final year in the university studying translation. Her future ambition is to help children have a better future through improving their education and environment.
