History was made in Lagos, on the 13th of November, as Ibinabo Fiberesima was sworn in as the first female president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). This was after Ibinabo was elected by eligible voters at the keenly contested election held on Thursday, the 27th of September, 2012. Speaking about the election, Ibinabo said;
The election is now over, all I am now after is to unite everyone in the guild and bring the A-list stars back into the guild. We are also starting with a health insurance and pension scheme for actors and actresses. It has never been done before. The motive is to put an end to the situation where actors go cap-in-hand to beg for money in times of difficulty. By the time we clock 100 days in office, the health insurance and the pension scheme would have been in place. As I speak, I’m just waiting for the data to ascertain how many actors and actresses who are members of the AGN.
The election brought about some controversy after Ayo Emmanuel (AGNEC chairman) announced EmekaRollas as the winner. Rachael Oniga, who served as the secretary of AGNEC, later announced Ibinabo as the winner, and the swearing-in took place afterwards. Ibinabo, who is a former beauty queen, will serve as the 7th president of the guild. Genevieve Nnaji, Segun Arinze. Steve Eboh, Ejike Asiegbu, Charles Inojie and others attended the event.
