Music legend Whitney Houston was laid to rest today (Sunday, February 19th, 2012) in Fairview Cemetary in Westfield, New Jersey next to her father, John Russell Houston, who died in 2003. A service of songs, which lasted for almost four hours, was held yesterday at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey.
Stevie Wonder, R.Kelly, Alicia Keys, BeBe Winans and Cece Winans were among those who performed at the funeral. Remarks were also made by Houston’s record producer, Clive Davis; her music director, Ricky Minor ; cousin Dionne Warwick; Ray Watson, her security guard for the past 11 years and Kevin Costner . Aretha Franklin was expected to sing but was unable to attend the service due to illness. Houston’s ex-husband, Bobby Brown, was also invited to the funeral but left before the service began. Whitney’s mother Cissy and daughter Bobbi Kristina, 18, were in the front row, both in black, both with heads bowed in grief.
Other celebrities that attended the service of songs include Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, Tyler Perry, LA Reid, Mary J.Blige, Brandy and brother Ray J (who was Whitney’s boyfriend) amongst others. Here are a few pictures from the service
