The First Lady was talking to a CBS affiliate in Vermont about the difficulties facing parents who are trying to balance busy work and home lives. She explained that she had been in a similar position to many other working parents before moving to the White House; “working, driving kids to practice, not having enough time to shop or cook, not having the energy”. However, her mistake came when she urged “Believe me, as a busy single mother”.
Mrs Obama quickly corrected herself, saying “I shouldn’t say ‘single’ – as a busy mother …”, and adding: “You know, when you’ve got the husband who’s president, it can feel a little single, but he’s there.” However, in spite of her hasty amendment, Mrs Obama has still come under criticism for the faux pas, with many arguing that her privileged lifestyle means she does not face the same difficulties many struggling single mothers do.
One woman’s comment on social media site ‘Twitchy’ read “Funny, I don’t recall having luxury vacations or servants or a free mansion.”, with someone else adding “Oh poor Michelle. Those nannies are not very helpful when you’re ALL ALONE…..GEEZ…”. Mrs Obama explained though, that although resources were not a problem for her family, time was.
In an earlier interview in Boston, she explained that she tells young women how important it is to be flexible, and that she believes: “We have to listen to ourselves, our own passions … and not measure our successes by someone else’s life.”
