Facebook introduces new gender options!

The world’s largest social media, Facebook, recently announced that it has expanded its male/female binary up to 56 new terms! That means you don’t have to be just male or female to be on Facebook anymore. A new option called custom”, is where 56 new terms have been made available for users to select and properly identify themselves. This will enable the 1.2 billion Users of Facebook to have more choices in how they describe themselves. Genders such as androgynous, Cisgender, intersex, gender fluid, Gender Nonconforming, Two-spirit are now available.

A Facebook software engineer ,Brielle Harrison, had this to say:

“There’s going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world,”

Harrison, also worked on the project and is undergoing gender transformation from male to female. She said she was changing her Facebook identity from Female to TransWoman.

Facebook says it worked with its “Network of Support, a group of leading LGBT advocacy organizations” in order to select the new gender identity options.
