Singer/Rapper and Former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria(MBGN), Munachi Abii, recently granted an interview. She spoke about her career, childhood, music and relationship. Here are the excerpts:
My name is Munachi Abii. I am 26 years old and a native of Imo State. I was born and raised in Port Harcourt. I studied International Relations at the Benson Idahosa University, Benin. I won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant in 2007. I represented Nigeria at the Miss World competition in China in the same year.
I remember sitting on a stool by the back door of our house in Ogbunabali, Port Harcourt. I was only five then. I was singing to myself while it rained and daydreaming about the day I’d be on the world stage performing before an audience.
Participating in MBGN was a dare. As a child, I had dreams of being a beauty queen but it wasn’t top five on my wish list. I didn’t see the possibility at the time. But, other people saw what I didn’t and they encouraged me to go for it. My intention was always to pursue music. Being a beauty queen gave me a platform to reach for the stars. Nobody taught me how; I had to learn everything on the job. Thank God for everything.
I’ve always had a thing for music. I’ve always been fascinated with the art of composition, lyrics and rhythm of music. I think I was about five years old when I composed my first song. I was inspired by stars like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur, and Biggie Smalls.
I love music in general. I relate better with rap and I don’t follow other people’s expectations. Life as a rap artiste has been interesting and I’m grateful for all the experience I’ve gained from interacting with my peers, making music, watching the rise and fall of so many greats. I’ve learnt a lot. It’s not easy but I am happy to have been able to witness a lot of things up close.
Great things take time and if it takes me seven years to make my debut album, I will do it and do it well. I am not here to fade away; I’m here to live forever. Everything inspires my compositions; from a bottle of soft drink to a phone call to spiders to laughter, joy, rage or sadness. The list is endless.
I don’t think my growth in the industry is sluggish. We all follow different paths. Just because somebody is famous today doesn’t mean I should be famous. My story is not his story. Besides, no one has the formula for this business. One just has to keep on doing it. Believe in yourself because a lot of people will doubt you. Rain does not fall forever; the sun must shine one day.
Music makes me happy
Whenever I’m in the studio and writing, I’m happy. I’m not thinking about my debtors, about who said what or did what or how I should please anyone. That’s my zone. Right or wrong, I’m fine with it and that’s key. Life is about happiness. If you don’t enjoy what you do, then you are not living, you merely exist.
I feel nothing for tabloids. When I first got into the industry, I was sensitive. It used to hurt but now, I’ve grown a thick skin. I understand it’s entertainment. It doesn’t bother me anymore. My family, close friends and true fans know me. That’s all that matters to me.
Working hard to be a good artiste.
Every artiste has to work extra hard. It doesn’t get easier with me. I am just like everyone else who believes in their craft. Work never stops.
I am easy-going and fun to be with. Those that have been bold enough to approach me are shocked to realise I’m not a snob in any way. It’s all wrong perception. It is only when you are not sure of yourself that you will make assumptions. Give it a try and say hello. I don’t bite.
I am dating somebody, but that is my private life. It is not supposed to be on display for the public to see. The qualities that will attract me to the opposite sex are a positive mind, relationship with God plus a sense of humour.
Lately, it’s been bold and daring. It’s very important in this business not to stay the same. I am in showbiz and I’ve to show something. So, I have to keep reinventing myself.
Music will pay my bills. However endorsements have paid me more in recent times. My mother also owns a company which I manage. So between work and music, my days are full of activity.
