Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, has been banned from the National Basketball Association(NBA) for life after a recording of his racist comments chastising his girlfriend for posting photos of black people(Magic Johnson) on her instagram page surfaced.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver who announced the ban said this:
“[Donald’s remarks are] contrary to the principles of inclusion and respect that form the foundations of our diverse, multi-cultural, and multi-ethnic league… I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the clippers organization or the NBA — Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any clippers facility, and he may not participate in any player or personnel decision involving the team… I am also fining Mr. Sterling $2,500,000, the maximum amount allowed under the bylaws of the NBA Constitution. We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterling’s views, they have no place in the NBA.”
Adam Silver has also said that he will do everything in his power to convince the other owners into forcing Donald Sterling to quickly sell the team. Hear him:
“That while Sterling still owns the Clippers, Silver said he would “Urge the Board of Governor’s to force Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team and will do everything in my power to ensure that happens.”
Read the racist comment Donald made to his girlfriend, Vanessa Stiviano, which put him into trouble:
“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.…Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.”
