Prof Sofoluwe, Vice Chancellor of UNILAG is dead

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe has died. He died in the early hours of this morning after suffering cardiac arrest. According to reports, Professor Sofoluwe slumped during a University meeting yesterday, at the Senate Chambers of the institution and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, (LUTH). He was confirmed dead after efforts to revive him failed.

The 62-year-old VC, who was credited with embarking on a remarkable transformation of the institution, died around 1a.m this morning. He had addressed a press conference on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, to mark the commencement of UNILAG’s Golden Anniversary and showed no sign of ill health.

Update:

Following the sudden death of University of Lagos Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe on Saturday May 12th, the authorities of the University have named the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Ade-Bello, as the acting VC of the institution.

Background

Sofoluwe was born on the 15th of April, 1950. He attended CMS Grammar School for his secondary education after which he proceeded to the University of Lagos to study Computer Science and graduated with a Second Class Upper Division (Honours) in 1973. Whilst studying, he was awarded a German scholarship for being brilliant academically, he also won the Dean’s prize in the 1971/72 academic year.

After graduating from UNILAG, he completed his one year compulsory service year (NYSC) and then proceeded to Edinburgh University, Scotland where he earned his Masters and Doctorate in 1981 in 1975 and 1981 respectively after he won the Commonwealth scholarship.

Upon his return back home, he kicked off his teaching career in UNILAG as a graduate assistant in 1976 and rose through the ranks till he became a full professor in 1996. He served served twice as the Head of the Computer Science Department between 1989 – 1991 and 1994 – 1996. He also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science between 1998 – 2002. He was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor and returned to the Governing Council in August 2006 by virtue of the appointment. On the 30th of January, 2010, Professor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe was appointed Vice Chancellor of UNILAG making him the third alumnus to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
